HEARTS & HALOS JOURNAL
Pet Loss, Legacy & Grief Support
Gentle guidance for the love that never really leaves
Gentle words, practical guidance, and quiet comfort for pet parents facing goodbye, grieving a beloved companion, or trying to preserve the love that changed their life.
This space was created for the tender in-between — the days when your pet is still here but time feels fragile, the moments after goodbye, and the long quiet season of learning how to carry their love forward.
Here, you’ll find support for anticipatory grief, end-of-life decisions, children and pet loss, memorial ideas, legacy photography, and the complicated emotions that come with loving an animal deeply.

For the pets who become part of who we are.
Pet grief is not “just sadness.” It can be love, shock, guilt, relief, longing, confusion, tenderness, and exhaustion all at once.
And when the bond is deep, the loss can touch every part of daily life — your routines, your home, your identity, your sense of safety, and the way you move through the world.
The Hearts & Halos journal is here to offer gentle support without rushing your grief, minimizing your bond, or asking you to “move on.” These articles are written for pet parents who need honest, compassionate guidance — and for the people who want to support them well.

When you’re not ready to say goodbye, but you know time is changing.
A Hearts & Halos legacy session is created for pets who are aging, seriously ill, nearing the end of life, or simply deeply loved. These sessions are quiet, patient, and comfort-led. There is no pressure for perfect posing, long walks, or forcing your pet to be anything other than exactly who they are. The goal is simple: to preserve the bond, the softness, the familiar details, and the love you never want to forget.
You do not need to know exactly what to ask. You can simply tell me what is happening, and we’ll take the next step gently.
Written with care, experience, and deep respect for the bond.
I’m Jennifer, the photographer behind Heads and Tails Photography and Hearts & Halos.
My work is rooted in years of photographing beloved pets, supporting families through tender seasons, and understanding how deeply animals shape our lives. Hearts & Halos was created for the pets who become family, the goodbyes that change us, and the photographs that help carry their light forward.
These articles are not meant to replace professional mental health, veterinary, or medical advice. They are here as compassionate support — a place to feel less alone, find language for what hurts, and honour a love that mattered.

My husband Shannon with Jazmin, she left us in 2019.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this blog only for people booking a photo session?
No. This space is for anyone navigating pet loss, anticipatory grief, or the tender process of remembering a beloved companion. You are welcome here whether you book a session or simply need support.
What is anticipatory grief?
Anticipatory grief is the grief that can begin before a loss happens. Many pet parents experience it when a pet is aging, seriously ill, declining, or nearing end of life. It can include sadness, fear, guilt, anxiety, tenderness, and the ache of knowing time may be limited.
Can legacy photography help after a diagnosis?
For many families, yes. Legacy photography can offer a way to slow down, preserve meaningful details, and create tangible memories during a time that often feels overwhelming. The session should always be comfort-led and adapted to the pet’s needs.
Should children be told the truth when a pet is dying or has died?
Children usually need clear, honest, age-appropriate language. Euphemisms such as “went to sleep,” “went to a farm,” or “went to a new home” can create confusion, fear, or mistrust. Gentle honesty gives children a chance to understand, ask questions, and say goodbye.
Do you offer pet loss support outside Nova Scotia?
The educational articles and resources are available to readers anywhere. Hearts & Halos photography sessions are based in Nova Scotia, with travel options depending on location and availability.
